Frank Mill was one of the most cunning strikers in Bundesliga history and won the FIFA World Cup with Germany in 1990. Now the ex-Borussia Dortmund player has died at the age of 67 as a result of a heart attack suffered in May, according to Bundesliga’s official website.

His former club Rot-Weiss Essen confirmed the devastating news on Tuesday afternoon.

Mill turned professional with Essen in 1976 at the age of 18 before going on to play for Borussia Mönchengladbach (1981-86), Borussia Dortmund (1986-94) and Fortuna Düsseldorf (1994-96). He scored 123 Bundesliga goals and 87 more in Bundesliga 2.

A 1988/89 DFB Cup winner with Dortmund, Mill went on to become world champion with the German national team in 1990.

"Our thoughts are with Frank Mills' family and loved ones. Borussia Dortmund mourns the loss of a great player of the 1980s and 1990s," said Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke.

"Fränkie was a sly fox on the pitch and a wonderful conversationalist off it. When he joined us in 1986, things were looking up. He played a major role in winning the DFB Cup in 1989, finishing runners-up in the 1992 Bundesliga, and reaching the UEFA Cup final in 1993."

BVB President Dr. Reinhold Lunow added: "He was one of my heroes and a welcome guest in our stadium over the years. Without Frank Mill, Borussia Dortmund would not have won the cup in 1989 and would not be where we are today."
