Azerbaijani People’s Writer Elchin Afandiyev passes away at 82

Elchin Ilyas oglu Afandiyev, a prominent Azerbaijani writer, playwright, critic, literary scholar, Doctor of Philology, and professor, has passed away at the age of 82.

A People's Writer since 1998, Elchin was a prominent member of the Azerbaijan Writers' Union and a notable public figure.

Born in Baku on May 13, 1943, Elchin Afandiyev began his writing career in the 1960s. He quickly became a leading figure of the influential "60s" literary generation, a group that holds a special place in Azerbaijani literature.

His prose, including countless stories and novellas, has been translated into numerous languages and published around the world, playing a crucial role in bringing Azerbaijani literature to a global audience.

Beyond his literary contributions, Elchin Afandiyev was a pivotal public and political figure. He served as Deputy Prime Minister of Azerbaijan from 1993 to 2018, where he played a key role in the country's socio-political and cultural life. In the late 1980s, as chairman of the "Vatan" society, he made invaluable contributions to enhancing the unity of Azerbaijanis living abroad, fostering their connection to their homeland, and shaping the diaspora movement.

In recognition of his exceptional services to Azerbaijani literature and culture, he was awarded the "Istiglal" Order and other high state honors.

"The Ministry of Culture expresses its deep sorrow over the passing of Elchin Afandiyev and extends its heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. His rich legacy and great contributions will forever live on in the memory of our people," the Ministry said in a statement.
