Baku declared World Capital of Sport for 2026

Baku, Azerbaijan, has been declared the World Capital of Sport for 2026.
On this occasion, an official signing ceremony for the World Capitals of Sport commemorative plaque was held on December 11, with the participation of state officials and representatives of the European Capitals and Cities of Sport Federation (ACES Europe).
The title of World Capital of Sport was officially transferred from Monaco to Baku.
Head of the Baku City Executive Power Eldar Azizov expressed his pride in Baku’s election as the World Capital of Sport for 2026, noting the successful development of sports in Azerbaijan under the attention and care of President Ilham Aliyev. He emphasized that sports infrastructure and opportunities have expanded significantly across all regions of the country.
Highlighting Azerbaijan’s reputation as a reliable host of major sporting events, Minister of Youth and Sports Farid Gayibov stated that Baku is set to host more major international competitions in the coming year.
President and Founder of ACES Europe Gian Francesco Lupattelli emphasized that Baku has consistently contributed to the development of sports. He noted that the city stands out for its modern, high-quality sports facilities.
ACES Europe (Association of European Capitals and Cities of Sport), is a Brussels-based non-profit body that recognizes cities, regions, and capitals promoting sport for social integration, well-being, and quality of life, partnering with the European Commission's European Week of Sport and UNESCO to foster sports policies aligned with ethical principles and sustainable development. They award titles like World Capital of Sport, European Capital of Sport, and others, based on responsible and ethical sports initiatives that improve community life.
