The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has formally recognized the professionalism, strong organization, and effective delivery demonstrated by Azerbaijan during COP29. Building on this recognition, the UNFCCC expressed its intention to engage Azerbaijan in the organization of future international climate events and initiatives.
The COP29 Presidency on 17 November met with the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) on the sidelines of COP30 in Belém.
The meeting was attended by Mukhtar Babayev, President of COP29 and Representative of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan for Climate Issues; Narmin Jarchalova, Chairperson of the Board of the COP29 Operating Company; Wasim Mir, Director of Conference Affairs at the UNFCCC; and Christine Adam, Director of Legal Affairs at the UNFCCC.
They discussed the legacy of COP29, including the way the Government of Azerbaijan was able to develop the human capital of their workforce and volunteers. During the discussion, both sides explored the potential of engaging specialists from Azerbaijan’s public and private sectors in upcoming international projects and events, with the intention of signing an official agreement in the coming weeks.
This strengthened cooperation will help showcase and export Azerbaijan’s successful COP29 hosting experience, along with the skills, professionalism, and technical expertise of Azerbaijani specialists, to global climate initiatives.
This dialogue once again highlights the international confidence Azerbaijan has earned and its expanding role in advancing global climate diplomacy.
