On November 24, the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the United Nations, in partnership with Arts Council Azerbaijan, inaugurated “The Second Life of Azerbaijani Carpets” exhibition at United Nations headquarters. The event was held in recognition of the Year of Sovereignty and Constitution of the Republic of Azerbaijan and highlighted one of the country’s most celebrated cultural traditions.
“Second Life” is a unique artistic initiative created by artists Sona Gulieva and Dadash Mammadov that revives old and worn-out Azerbaijani carpets through a combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern artistic techniques. By restoring and reimagining pieces that otherwise might have been discarded, the project highlights the enduring relevance of cultural heritage and reflects the values of sustainability and responsible consumption.
At the opening ceremony, the Permanent Representative of Azerbaijan to the United Nations welcomed diplomats, UN officials, and guests to the unveiling of the exhibition. In his remarks, he emphasized the deep historical significance of carpet weaving in Azerbaijan and underscored values central to sustainable development, including the responsible use of resources and the revitalization of cultural heritage.
Guests at the opening ceremony also heard from the artist Sona Gulieva, the creative force behind the project. She shared insights into her artistic process and the vision of breathing new life into old carpets.
The exhibition will remain on display at UN Headquarters and will be open for viewing through November 28.
