“Black January is important in the United States because it set off the death of the Soviet Union,” Glen Howard, the President and Chairman of the US Saratoga Foundation told AZERTAC.

“It was Azerbaijan's moment in history as a people developed their own identity and restored their national sovereignty,” he added.

Noting that it set off the path to independence, Glen Howard emphasized: “But it also serves symbolically, as a symbol, to other peoples of the Soviet Union at that time because they were eager and protective of their national identity. Black January is not just about Azerbaijan, but about the region and what it meant at that time historically. This is a very important moment in its national history and identity.”
