FK Qarabag’s historic victory (3:2) over Benfica in Portugal during the league phase of the UEFA Champions League has been widely covered by the foreign press.

Several prominent European sports publications have published articles about the Azerbaijan champion’s triumph in Lisbon.

Spain’s Marca noted that Qarabag refused to give up until the final minutes, resulting in a remarkable comeback and making history: “Although Bahlul Mustafazade’s header was disallowed due to offside, the atmosphere at the ‘Da Luz’ stadium had already shifted. Qarabag had control of the game. This was not just a victory, but a new historic page for Azerbaijan football in the Champions League.”

“Mundo Deportivo” wrote that Qarabag’s determination paid off in the final moments: “After Camilo Duran’s cool-headed goal into the hosts’ net, Benfica was left completely helpless. The consecutive goals by the Aghdam team completely demoralized the Lisbon side.”

France’s prestigious L’Équipe publication highlighted Benfica’s surprisingly poor performance with astonishment. The article stated that the Lisbon club, with extensive Champions League experience, unexpectedly faltered against Qarabag: “The Aghdam representative marked its return to the Champions League after seven years with a magnificent victory.”

England’s “The Athletic” noted that the match would remain unforgettable for both teams. The BBC described the post-match scene as follows: “After the final whistle, Qarabag’s players and coaches knelt to celebrate the historic victory. This success has been etched into the annals of the Champions League.”

Portugal’s “Record” portal emphasized that last night marked one of the rare moments in Benfica’s 121-year history when they lost at home after leading by at least two goals.

The Turkish press reported that Qarabag’s historic triumph resonated widely across Europe. “Yeni Şafak” described the match result as the surprise of the night, highlighting Qarabag’s magnificent comeback on the road, writing a new chapter in history.
