At the invitation of the Government of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, Elchin Huseynli, Azerbaijan`s non-resident ambassador to the country, visited the capital Colombo to participate in the festive events marking Sri Lanka's national holiday - Independence Day.
The ambassador attended a military parade and an official reception organized in Colombo, and met with Vijitha Herath, Sri Lanka's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism; Arun Hemachandra, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs; Aruni Ranaraja Foreign Secretary and other officials.
During the meeting, the sides expressed their interest in the development of bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Sri Lanka in the fields of politics, economy and trade, energy, tourism, air transport and education. They emphasized the importance of more active cooperation and exchanges in multilateral formats, especially during Azerbaijan's chairmanship of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) and the upcoming 13th Session of the UN World Urban Forum (WUF13) to be held in Baku on 17–22 May 2026.
The officials of Sri Lanka expressed their gratitude to the leadership and people of Azerbaijan for the opportunity provided for the citizens to participate in Azerbaijan's public education grant programs, as well as for the humanitarian assistance provided during the recent natural disaster in the country.
