It may be beautiful on the outside, but inside, pineapple is full of goodness too – vitamin C, manganese, dietary fiber, and the crown jewel: Bromelain – a unique enzyme that breaks down proteins, found mainly in the stem and fresh juice of the fruit.
Bromelain not only helps break down proteins – it’s also a rising star in medical research. A comprehensive review published in 2021 in Foods found that bromelain has the potential to reduce inflammatory processes, improve wound healing, and relieve edema. Other studies point to possible benefits in dealing with arthritis, inflammatory bowel diseases, and even cancerous conditions.
And if that’s not enough – pineapple also contains polysaccharides with anti-tumor effects, which may inhibit the spread of cancer cells, at least under lab conditions. Additionally, the strong antioxidant activity of the active compounds in pineapple may help protect the body’s cells from oxidative damage and metabolic wear.
It’s insanely delicious and also visually impressive, but pineapple has amazing health benefits, including immediate aid for digestion and even anti-cancer properties. What are you waiting for?
Eat it every day?
As always with nutrition – it’s all about dose and balance. True, this fruit is rich in natural sugar, but when eaten as part of a balanced diet – it’s a healthy, tasty, and nutritious addition. It’s best to choose fresh pineapple rather than canned or cooked, since thermal processing harms its healthy enzyme activity, especially bromelain.
Beyond its wonderful taste, pineapple adds color, texture, and an unmatched aroma. It goes great in green smoothies, fruit salads, and even grilled – alongside chicken breast, salmon, or tofu. Yes, pineapple on the grill totally works.
And there’s a bonus: If you feel heavy after a meaty meal – a slice of fresh pineapple may definitely ease that feeling thanks to its digestive support.
And what about allergies or side effects?
Despite its many benefits, it’s important to know that not everyone reacts to pineapple the same way. Some people, especially when eating large amounts of fresh pineapple, may experience a tingling sensation in the mouth or lips – a result of the bromelain and the fruit’s high acidity. This is usually a mild and temporary reaction, but if a real allergic reaction develops – it’s important to seek medical advice.
And who is it less suitable for? Those sensitive to sugar or with high blood sugar levels should consult a dietitian about the recommended portion size. Remember, even a natural, healthy fruit contains sugar that is absorbed by the body.
